BERLIN - Tomorrow, 193 world leaders and UN member states will gather with the support of the Pope and commit to the Global Goals 2015 - 2030. This may be our last chance to save humanity and the planet.

The Global Goals Initiative started in the 25th G8 summit, held in Cologne in 1999, where the world-changing decision was made to cancel the debts of countries that would reorient their savings into social sectors. Subsequently in 2000, the UN Millennium Summit set 8 goals to achieve in the next 15 years. Today, 15 years later, we can look back at the big ideas, the accomplishments and the broken promises.

The biggest accomplishments can be found in the medical sector. The mortality rate for under-fives dropped by over two thirds, the spread of HIV and AIDS as well as other diseases has been reversed, and polio appears to have been eradicated thanks to the great initiative of foundations like the Bill Gates Foundation.

Extreme poverty and hunger have been almost halved since 1990, but 800 million people are still undernourished and living in extreme poverty. Similar things can be said about primary school enrollment: figures have shown an impressive rise, but in order to achieve universal primary education we still have a long way to go.
The world has failed to stop war and the rise of terrorism in the Middle East and has missed crucial opportunities to fight climate change, affecting us and all the future generations worldwide.
The new 17 Global Goals shall change this. We shall achieve 3 crucial things in the next 15 years. End Extreme Poverty. Fight Inequality & Injustice. Fix Climate Change.

THE LAST CHANCE

The implementation of the new Global Goals may be our last chance to save the planet. However, governments lack financial resources and commitment.

In order to find an answer to the question how to finance this necessary change and how to choose new structures, Cinema for Peace has developed the Universal Peace Plan with President Gorbachev and in collaboration with organizations and individuals from all over the world. This initiative proposes, among other points, reducing military expenses by 10 percent every 3 years and using these funds for extreme poverty alleviation, climate protection, and education.
