Justice for Sergei

Justice for Sergei is the award winning documentary about the death of Sergei Magnitsky. He was a Russian attorney representing Bill Browder, the founder of Hermitage Capital, who himself went overnight from being "the largest portfolio investor in Russia" with more than 5 billion dollars of funds to "one of the biggest enemies of the state".

In 2008 Sergei Magnitsky discovered and testified about the involvement of Russian Interior Ministry officials in the largest ever theft of Russian state funds. He was immediately arrested and imprisoned by those very same officials in order to silence him. After being denied medical attention in prison, he died under excruciating conditions only days before the expiration of the one year limit that he could be held without trial. His death in police custody generated international media attention and launched an investigation into allegations of abuse. His case has become an international cause célèbre.

The UK Telegraph comments on his death: “When Sergei Magnitsky was buried it was hard to imagine that his death would one day cause Moscow and Washington to fall out. But at the end of July that is exactly what happened. Washington has quietly banned up to 60 Russian officials accused of involvement in his horrific death from entering the US and the Kremlin is busy drawing up its own blacklist of US officials to bar in revenge. Sergei Magnitsky is not a household name in Russia or the West. But the shameful way in which he died at the age of just 37 in a squalid Moscow prison has become emblematic of much that is rotten with Russia's judicial, police and political system.”

Watch the incredible documentary that has the power to change the law all over the world. Bill Browder has been successfully lobbying change of laws in the US and in Europe. Due to his actions and with the support of Senator McCain and 17 other congressman the “Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2011” was introduced in August 2011. A bill to impose sanctions on persons responsible for the detention, abuse, or death of Sergei Magnitsky, for the conspiracy to defraud the Russian Federation of taxes on corporate profits through fraudulent transactions and lawsuits against Hermitage, and for other gross violations of human rights in the Russian Federation, and for other purposes.
