Mary & Martha – Fighting Malaria

LONDON – Malaria can be eradicated in our lifetime. Legendary screenwriter Richard Curtis has produced a movie for the World Malaria Day on April 25th. The film tells the story of two housewives from the UK and US whose lives are changed by malaria when their children die. In Africa, the deaths caused by Malaria have been cut down by a third over the last decade, while child mortality has gone down 20 %. But this remarkable progress is threatened as the focus on malaria control is beginning to shift and funding has been cut. Donor countries should not stop now as the fight is not yet over.

We invite you to join a screening of the film "MARY & MARTHA" with Hillary Swank in the US on HBO on April 20th and in Berlin at Hackesche Höfe Kino, Rosenthaler Str. 40 on Wednesday, April 24th at 8 PM.

The Berlin screening will be accompanied by a message from Richard Curtis, who explains why he chose the fight against malaria as the topic of his latest film. There will also be a panel discussion with global health experts Uwe Kekeritz and Professor Detlev Ganten. Please reserve your seats before April 22nd, for instructions on how to do so please clickhere.

Richard Curtis is not only one of Britain's most successful screenwriters, with global hits such as Mr. Bean, Bridget Jones, Four Weddings and Notting Hill, but also the co-founder of Comic Relief, an organization that has raised nearly 1 billion euros for charitable causes through initiatives such as Red Nose Day, and the Make Poverty History movement. Cinema for Peace has been actively involved – in 2005 we brought for Bob Geldof the German delegation to the Live 8 concert in Edinburgh, in 2006 we honored Curtis and his film "THE GIRL IN THE CAFE" at the Cinema for Peace Gala Berlin.  In 2007 we produced and premiered the remake  "SUDDENLY GINA" for the G8 summit and in 2009 Cinema for Peace produced a short film on the so-called Robin Hood Tax, which is finally being established all over Europe.

We invite you to watch the following trailers on the topic of malaria:

  • MARY & MARTHA is a film about two mothers losing their sons to malaria and then embarking on a journey of self-discovery to Africa.
  • MALARIA – RETURN TO FEVER ROAD is a documentary about the harsh realities of malaria in a Kenyan rural village.
  • AFRICA – THE MALARIA PARASITES is the untold story of how the global racket in fake drugs turned an easily curable disease into Africa’s biggest child killer. According to leading scientists, millions of children could have been saved if the pharmaceutical industry and World Health Organisation had collaborated to address the problem.
