Guido Westerwelle

With great sadness, we learned of Guido Westerwelle’s passing. Germany has lost a great humanitarian.

Dr. Guido Westerwelle sought to create opportunities for the resolution of conflicts through discourse instead of war. He was the embodiment of tremendous humanitarian engagement, not only in his official capacity as Foreign Minister, but also in his personal life. He introduced the universal human rights logo that we, together with Robert De Niro, had the honor of presenting at the UN General Assembly in New York. He took an active part in documenting and memorializing the Genocide in Srebrenica through Cinema for Peace's "Genocide Film Library" and on a long-term basis, he supported Sean Penn and his efforts to save lives in Haiti.

His incredible commitment to the victims of natural disasters, war and injustice, set him apart from others, as a politician and a person.

Our condolences go out to Guido Westerwelle's family and his partner and husband of many years, Michael Mronz.
