Film Selection: Yugoslavia

Being founded on the idea of a role-model multinational state after World War II, it was mainly due to Josip Tito´s powerful leadership that upcoming nationalistic movements in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia could be avoided in the initial phase. Though after Tito´s death on 4th of May 1980 ethnic tensions in the country had already increased, multi-ethnic wars broke out when the communist systems of Eastern Europe collapsed in 1990 and the Former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was on the way to split up into sovereign countries. Between 1991 and 1995 the Yugoslav Wars took place all over the country and were mainly fought between the three biggest ethnic groups, Serbs, Bosniaks and Croats. Often described as Europe´s deadliest conflicts since World War II, the conflicts have become infamous for the war crimes involved, including mass ethnic cleansings as they took place in Srebrenica in 1995.
